Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United Betting Tips: Form Guide

Wednesday Want To Win More Often

Jos Luhukay’s Sheffield Wednesday team have struggled to find consistency so far in 2018/19, and currently sit in 10th place in the table. The Championship can change quickly, though, especially if a team can put a decent run together, and they will still see themselves as genuine contenders to win promotion to the Premier League. They are, after all, only four points behind their opponents on Friday night, who sit top of the table. Leeds have 18 points, while the Owls have 14.

Wednesday were boosted last weekend with a fine 2-1 win away at Aston Villa. Even though they conceded one of the goals of the season, when John McGinn struck a wonder volley to equalise for Villa, Wednesday showed enough resolve to restore their lead, and come away from the West Midlands with three points. Their goals at Villa were scored by Marco Matias, who put them into the lead in the 49th minute, and Scotland international striker Steven Fletcher, who struck the winner in the 67th minute of the game. The week before, Wednesday had been beaten away at Nottingham Forest, and they drew at home with Stoke City the game before that.

Leeds Looking To Collect More Points

Marco Bielsa’s Leeds team have been wobbling over the last month or so, after starting the season in fine style. They are still at the top of the Championship table, despite only winning once in their last five games. That win came at home to Preston North End two weeks ago, when the Whites beat the Lancashire outfit 3-0 at Elland Road. That victory was some measure of revenge for being knocked out of the League Cup by North End at the end of the August. It was also the first win for Leeds since exiting the League Cup, as they followed up that defeat with a 0-0 draw at home to Middlesbrough. They then went to London to face Millwall, and came away with another away point, drawing 0-0 at The Den.

They could not build on the league win over Preston, though, as last week the Whites were beaten 2-1 away at struggling Birmingham City. That was the Blues’ first league win of the season, so Bielsa will have been frustrated that his team were not more ruthless. He should have no problem motivating his troops for this Friday’s game, though. Yorkshire derbies provide their own motivation.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Leeds United Preview: Recent Meetings

The most recent meetings between these two old Yorkshire foes came last season, when both teams were, as now, in the Championship. The first of those encounters was at Hillsborough on October 1, 2017. The home side emerged victorious from the contest, claiming a convincing 3-0 victory. Gary Hooper bagged a brace of goals for the Owls in the first half, netting in the 25th and 41st minutes. Kieran Lee added a third in the 82nd minute.

The second game was at Elland Road on March 17 this year. It was the team from South Yorkshire who came out on top again, this time winning 2-1. Adthe Nuhiu scored both of the Wednesday goals, opening the scoring in the game’s 71st minute. Jay-Roy Grot equalised for the Whites with four minutes of normal time remaining. Nuhiu had not finished his work for the afternoon, though, and the Kosovo international scored the winner in injury time.
