St Mirren
Celtic

St Mirren welcome the mighty Celtic to Paisley on Friday night for a game that will be a tough test for the Buddies. The home side has endured a tough start to the season, having won only one league game so far in 2018/19. They have a new manager in place, though, who has made some bold statements in the lead-up to this match which might lift his players.

St Mirren vs Celtic Betting Tips: Form Guide

A New Era For St Mirren

St Mirren have been through some changes over the last week or two, with Northern Irishman Oran Kearney being appointed as the first team manager. The 40-year-old Ulsterman has replaced Englishmen Allan Stubbs in the gaffer’s hot seat in Paisley. He has a job on his hands if he wants to keep the Saints safe from relegation this season, but he is nothing if not positive, having stated that it is his ambition to win the Scottish Premiership with St Mirren. Kearney does have success in Northern Ireland to back up his ambition. He took Irish League side Coleraine to their first silverware in 15 years when they won the Irish Cup. The game in Northern Ireland is a level or two below that of the Scottish Premiership, but Kearney is clearly a man who relishes a challenge.

That is what he has on his hands with St Mirren too. Since beating Dundee 2-1 in Paisley on the opening day of the Scottish league season, Saints have not won again. Facing Celtic in his first game probably does Kearney a favour, in that expectations for his side are zero, given the quality in the Bhoys’ squad.

Celtic Must Stay Focused

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has told the Scottish press this week that he is expecting a tough game against St Mirren in Paisley on Friday evening. He has also talked up the history and pedigree of the Buddies. Anyone with any interest in Scottish football, though, knows that Rodgers and his team are expected to make short work of St Mirren. The Celts’ main enemy in this game will be complacency. St Mirren have occasionally upset Celtic in Paisley, and the Hoops players must be ready to face a motivated and aggressive Saints team, with their players keen to impress their new manager.

The Bhoys head into this game boosted by having reached the group stages of the Europa League, having knocked out Lithuanian side Suduva over two legs. The players should also feel confident after having beaten fierce rivals Rangers 1-0 at Parkhead in their last league game before the international break. In truth, the single goal did not reflect the Celts’ dominance over their rivals from Govan, as they also hit the crossbar three times. As stated above, Celtic’s main enemy in this game on Friday will be complacency, as they have a good recent record against the Saints.

St Mirren vs Celtic Preview: Recent Meetings

These two sides have not played each other in a league game since the 2014/15 season, when St Mirren were last in the top flight of Scottish football. That season, Saints played the Celts three times in the league, and lost all three, with two of those games being in Paisley and one at Parkhead. Int he three games, St Mirren scored two goals and Celtic scored 10, giving an idea of the disparity between the sides at that point in time. St Mirren went on to be relegated.

St Mirren have, of course, been through a lot since that season, and won promotion back to the top flight last season. The last meeting between the sides was in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup in March 2017. That game, at Celtic Park, was won 4-1 by the Hoops, who fought back after going a goal down in the 13th minute.

St Mirren vs Celtic Prediction: Comfortable Away Win

If you are looking for St Mirren vs Celtic betting tips for today it is worth noting that the bookies have made Celtic massive favourites for this game. Even at home, St Mirren are seen as having little chance of winning against Scotland’s champions. The Saints, of course, have a new manager in place, and could also have a new centre back in the team for the clash, with Anton Ferdinand expected to sign for the club this week. Whether the Englishman can help the Buddies stem the Celtic tide remains to be seen. St Mirren will need to work very hard, and stay organised for the whole game, if they are to have any chance at all of causing what would be a massive upset. Our prediction is therefore that Celtic will see off an early challenge to win the game comfortably by at least a two-goal margin.
