Wales vs Slovakia Betting Tips: Form Guide

Wales Lack Of Consistency Lets Them Down

There seems to be few more appropriate places to start looking at Wales’ recent form than their failure to qualify for the World Cup. Their tournament dreams were dashed at the hands of the Republic of Ireland in a 1-0 heartbreaker. The same could be said for their follow up friendly, where they lost 2-0 to France, and again when they drew 1-1 with Panama.

Throughout these games, there was obvious potential in the Welsh side, but they seemed to be lacking a killer instinct and an ability to get the job done. That changed in a 6-0 scorcher over China: one which made Gareth Bale the country’s top goalscorer.

Their dreams of lifting the China Cup were not to be though, as they fell to a brilliant Uruguay performance 1-0. Wales again came roaring back with a 4-1 win over Ireland, which was a result that surely helped heal some of those World Cup wounds. They also beat them 1-0 in a follow-up match.

Sadly, dual losses to Denmark – which ended 2-0 and 2-1 respectively – once again halted their momentum. Following that, their last outings of note saw them lose 1-0 to Albania, and best Trinidad & Tobago by the same score. Ultimately, Wales have lacked consistency, but have shown enough to justify their position as favourites in the majority of Wales vs Slovakia betting tips.

A Surprisingly Bright Start Of The Year For Slovakia

Slovakia’s recent performances have, like their Welsh counterparts, been extremely hit and miss. However, unlike their opponents, the seesaw outcomes have unfortunately been weighed too heavily on the negative over the past year. There’s no doubt that’s a huge part of the reason for the lack of faith in the team in so many Wales vs Slovakia betting tips for today.

Their 2018 ended in a depressingly familiar fashion, although not one without hope. They suffered dual losses in the UEFA Nations League, falling 1-0 to Ukraine and 2-1 to the Czech Republic. However, a 1-1 draw against Sweden in an international friendly gave them a reason to be positive.

The follow-up – a startling 4-1 rematch win over Ukraine – really felt like it had turned the tide, only for them to crash back down to earth with another loss to the Czech Republic, in a 1-0 loss this time around. And so ended 2018 for Slovakia. In a way, it summed up so much of their year: frustrating but not without potential.

This year, however, kicked off far more positively than many expected, with Slovakia besting Hungary 2-0 in their first Euro Qualification match. However, it’s not been enough to edge out their opponents as favourites in the Wales vs Slovakia match previews. After all, we’ve been here too many times with Slovakia to be overly optimistic. We’ll need more proof to believe that they’ve truly turned a corner. A win over Wales here might achieve just that.

Wales vs Slovakia Preview: Recent Meetings

There’s only one meeting we can really call recent and therefore relevant to Wales vs Slovakia betting tips for today. That would be their match from back in June 2016 in their Euro opener. Wales won 2-1 but not without a great deal of difficulty: a late match winner by Robson-Kanu made the difference. He may have retired from international football as of August last year but the man who proceeded that goal with a brilliant dipping free-kick was, unsurprisingly, Gareth Bale. It will be interesting to see if he can repeat history again here.

A decade before that, these two also traded wins in the Euro Cup Qualifications, with each game being a high-scoring, exciting outing. Slovakia won the first match in 2006, besting Wales 5-1, who then got their own back with a 5-2 victory the following year.

Overall though, we have to give Wales the slight advantage when viewed through the lens of recent meetings, as they’ve won what is by far their most modern and relevant encounter.

Wales vs Slovakia Prediction: Hard-Fought Wales Win

It can sometimes be tricky to predict a game when you have a team that is well known for being all over the place when it comes to performances and results. That’s even truer when you have two teams, as is the case here. However, it comes down to who has the most positives on their side.

Slovakia does have something to cheer about after that win over Hungary kicked off their 2019 in style. That being said, they’ve bounced back only to crash and burn too many times for us to truly consider it an accurate indicator of their likely results going forward.

Wales, on the other hand, might also jump from victories to defeats like a yo-yo, but there is some consistency in the teams they generally lose against. And without meaning to put down the talents of Slovakia, Wales do tend to come out on top when they go up against a side with their opponent’s kind of recent record. With that in mind, our Wales vs Slovakia prediction is a hard-fought victory for the home side.
