West Ham United
Birmingham City

West Ham United welcome the Championship’s eighth-placed team to the London Stadium this Saturday, with Birmingham City the visitors for a third round FA Cup tie. The east London side have not won in two games, and look set for a season in mid-table. Hammers gaffer Manuel Pellegrini may well be eyeing an FA Cup run as a way of putting a nice gloss on the campaign.

West Ham vs Birmingham City Betting Tips: Form Guide

Hammers Hoping For Victory

West Ham will be looking to avoid a third successive game without a victory this weekend, after losing and drawing their last two games. The first of those games was a 2-0 defeat away at Burnley on December 30, a result which they followed up with a 2-2 draw at home to Brighton & Hove Albion. The Brighton game was somewhat strange, with all the goals coming in a 12-minute period in the second half. Albion scored in the 56th and 58th minutes, before West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic bagged a brace of goals, netting in the 66th and 68th minutes. Mark Noble came off the bench in the second half, and made a valuable contribution to the Hammers’ cause.

Pellegrini does have a pretty lengthy injury list to deal with for this game, with Ryan Fredericks, Fabian Balbuena, Winston Reid, Carlos Sanchez, Jack Wilshere, Manuel Lanzini, Andriy Yarmolenko and Javier Hernandez all on the treatment table. Given that the Hammers will be prioritising the Premier League at this stage of the season, Pellegrini may well rotate his team too, so some unfamiliar faces could be on show in claret and blue on Saturday.

Blues On An Unbeaten Run

Birmingham boss Garry Monk has acknowledged this week that his team are definite underdogs for this tie, but he is confident that his players will not let themselves down when it comes to effort and commitment to the cause. Those effort levels are likely to be boosted by the presence at the London Stadium of around 5000 travelling Blues fans, who will be sure to contribute to a passionate atmosphere on Saturday. City picked up eight points from a possible 12 over the Christmas period, so they will be feeling pretty confident that they can go to the capital and cause an upset this weekend.

City have drawn their last two games, 0-0 at home to Brentford and 1-1 away at Sheffield Wednesday. Prior to that, they won two games on the bounce, beating Wigan Athletic 3-0 away and then triumphing 2-0 over Stoke City at St Andrew’s. That means that in their last four games not only are Birmingham unbeaten, but they have scored six goals and conceded just one. West Ham will need to treat the West Midlands side with care this weekend, or they could come unstuck.

West Ham vs Birmingham City Preview: Recent Meetings

West Ham and Birmingham have played each other on 94 previous occasions in their history. The Hammers have won 32 games, there have been 22 draws, and the Blues have won on 40 occasions. The two sides have not played each other since the 2011/12 season, when they were both in the Championship.

That season, the teams met twice in the league, with both games ending in score draws. The first encounter was at St Andrew’s in December 2011. That game ended 1-1, with Carlton Cole opening the scoring for West Ham after just four minutes, and David Murphy equalising late on for the Blues. The second game, in April 2012, at Upton Park, ended in a 3-3 draw. Ricardo Vaz Te scored two for the Hammers, with Carlton Cole scoring the other. Jordan Mutch, Marlon King and Chris Burke were the Birmingham scorers that day.

West Ham vs Birmingham City Prediction: Narrow Home Win

If you’re looking for West Ham vs Birmingham City betting tips for today, then our prediction for this game is that the home side will win the game 2-1, and progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup. Birmingham are no mugs, and will be keen to prove their quality against a Premier League outfit. In the end, home advantage will work in the Hammers’ favour, and they will see off a strong challenge from the Blues, who may well come close to forcing a draw at the end of the game.
